What was released?
Opus 5.5 is a newer, more capable version of Claude. Anthropic calls each version a model.
It’s not a new app. It’s not a new company or a new subscription. It’s a stronger version inside the Claude you may already use.
Think of it like a new engine in the same car. The car looks the same. It just runs better.
Opus 5.5 takes over from Opus 5 as Anthropic’s main choice for hard work. Anthropic also sells a bigger, more expensive version called Fable 5.1. Anthropic says Opus 5.5 does about as well as Fable 5.1 on most work, for less money.
What changed that matters to you?
1. It’s better at hard jobs
Opus 5.5 is built for jobs with many steps. Think of a detailed report, a research project or a big planning task. Anthropic says it stays on track better when the job is long and complicated.
What this means for you: You may need fewer rounds of fixing on hard tasks. That doesn’t mean you can stop checking its work.
2. It writes more clearly
Anthropic says Opus 5.5:
- puts the most important information first
- uses less jargon
- follows your writing instructions more closely
Early testers said the same. No independent group has tested its writing yet, so take this as Anthropic’s claim for now.
What this means for you: Its answers may be easier to understand and easier to change to fit your needs.
3. It’s faster, and it costs less to run
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 writes its answers more than 30% faster than Opus 5.
Some businesses pay for each piece of work Claude does, instead of a monthly plan. For them, prices dropped 20%. Anthropic says the usual job now costs about 40% less, because it also takes fewer steps.
On a regular monthly plan, like Pro, you pay a flat price. You don’t pay per message. But your plan does have usage limits.
4. It handles lots of information at once
Anthropic built Opus 5.5 to work with a very large amount of material. That includes long documents, research notes, screenshots, charts and long chats.
It can read pictures, like a photo of a chart. It answers in writing. It doesn’t make pictures.
Is it really the best?
It depends on the job. Here’s what the tests show so far.
Where Opus 5.5 leads
In Anthropic’s own tests, Opus 5.5 came first at:
- professional work, like reports and analysis
- coding and building software
- hard questions that mix many subjects
- using a computer, like clicking through software to finish a task
- reading charts
An independent testing company, Artificial Analysis, also ranked it first overall in its launch-week tests. But the lead looked smaller in some of their tests. On one coding test, it tied with OpenAI’s top version.
For businesses that pay per use, Opus 5.5 also costs less than the top versions from OpenAI and from Anthropic itself.
Where other tools do better
- GPT-6 Astra, from OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT), did better at automating business tasks and at science research in Anthropic’s own tests. It’s also strong at using a computer and at finding details in very long documents. It tends to use fewer words to get to the answer.
- Gemini 3.8 Flash, from Google, costs much less for businesses that pay per use. It works with writing, pictures, audio and video. It’s a good fit for quick, high-volume work, or if your business runs on Google tools.
- Claude Sonnet 5, a lighter Claude version, is cheaper and faster for everyday tasks. Most simple jobs, like a quick email draft, don’t need Opus.
So Opus 5.5 is a strong choice for difficult business work right now. It’s not the best at everything, and it still makes mistakes.
Why this matters now
The best AI tools are getting smarter, faster and cheaper, all at the same time.
That means a one-person business can now get top-level help with an ordinary paid Claude account. This kind of help used to be built for big companies: professional analysis, research, design and software work.
It also means the question is changing.
The old question: Which AI tool should I use?
The new question: Which parts of my business deserve the strongest help?
These tools change every few months. Opus 5.5 won’t be the newest for long. So don’t wait for the perfect AI. Try the one in front of you on a real task.
Where could it help your business?
Here are some ideas to explore. Each one comes with a question to ask yourself first. The question helps you decide what kind of expert help you’d want.
- Marketing. Look over your offers, who you sell to and where you advertise. Ask yourself: What would an experienced marketer question before I spend money?
- Your website. Check its layout, wording, menus and whether it’s easy for everyone to use. Ask yourself: What would a web designer notice right away about my site?
- Social media. Look at which apps you use, what you post and whether it fits your customers. Ask yourself: What would a social media expert need to know before suggesting a plan?
- Research. Compare your market, your competitors or what your customers need. Ask yourself: Which of my guesses need proof before I act?
- Paperwork. Break down a task you repeat every week or month. Ask yourself: Which task keeps coming back and takes time without much payoff?
- Customer service. Review the questions customers ask most, and how you answer them. Ask yourself: Which questions come up again and again?
- Planning. Test an idea, a budget, a launch plan or a big decision. Ask yourself: What risks would an experienced adviser push back on?
How to try Opus 5.5 in Canada
Claude is officially available in Canada. Here’s how to get started.
- Go to claude.ai on a computer, or get the Claude app on your phone.
- Sign up with your Google account or your email.
- Choose a paid plan. Opus 5.5 is on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It’s not on the free plan. For one person, Pro is the usual choice.
- Start a new chat.
- Choose Opus 5.5. Find the version name near the send button. Tap or click it and choose Opus 5.5. If you don’t see it, look under More models.
- Leave the effort setting as it is. Higher effort makes Claude think longer, but it uses up your plan’s allowance faster.
Screens change often. If yours looks different, look for the version name near where you type.
What does it cost?
Claude Pro is US$20 a month. Or it’s US$17 a month if you pay US$200 for the whole year up front. Tax is extra.
These are US prices. Checkout may show a different amount in Canadian dollars. Check the final price before you pay.
Every plan has usage limits. There’s no set number of messages you’re promised.
Prices and facts checked September 24, 2026. They change often, so check Claude’s website for the latest.
Try this first
Don’t switch your whole business over to AI. Start with one careful test.
- Pick one real task. Choose something that affects your sales, your costs or your customers.
- Ask what an expert would look at. Ask Claude what an experienced expert would check first.
- Give it the facts about your business. Share what you already have, like your price list, flyer or website text.
- Check the answer. Look for wrong facts, and for guesses stated as facts.
- Compare. Put its ideas next to the way you do things now.
- Make your call. Did it help you make a better decision? Or did it just sound impressive?
Before you use it for real
- Opus 5.5 can still get things wrong.
- You’re still responsible for your business, legal, money and customer decisions.
- Don’t paste passwords, banking details, private client records, health information or other very private documents into a personal Claude account.
- Before you use business material, check Claude’s privacy settings. That includes whether your chats can be used to improve Claude.
The bottom line
Opus 5.5 stands out for one main reason. Top-level AI help just got smarter, faster and cheaper, all at once.
It’s not the best at everything. And you don’t need to change everything to use it. Try it on one real task, and see if it helps.
